Who in this world moves the pieces—and who is merely a pawn? Blades and brushes alike have chronicled loyalty and righteousness, then turned to scheme treason. The dances within the Golden Throne Hall have not yet ceased, yet half the empire has already withered. Some are granted titles and appointed to high office; others are left to barter their children for food. The court, crowded with officials in crimson and purple, deliberates on the affairs of the state, yet no one stoops to hear the cries of the common people.
