Expansion of Jin

Synopsis

The character kuo means “to expand,” but it also carries the sense of a thorough cleansing.

Cast into the tumultuous era of the Eastern Jin (317–420 CE) and the Sixteen Kingdoms (304–439 CE), any transmigrator would naturally dream of stirring the waters midstream and vowing to launch the Northern Expeditions. The path seems self-evident: first, drive the Five Hu from the Central Plains; then, sweep away the great Aristocratic Clans entrenched in the royal court. Only then can one truly cleanse the realm, found a new order, and extend the legacy of Huaxia (Chinese civilization).

At least, that is how it should unfold in theory.

But when a modern soul awakens in the autumn of the fifth year of the Yonghe reign—specifically, in 349 CE—as nothing more than an ordinary refugee of the Eastern Jin, lofty ambitions must be set aside. The immediate concerns are brutally simple: how to survive the coming winter, and how to stay above the invisible line that decides who is worth keeping alive—and who falls beneath the execution threshold.

Thus it begins: not with heroism and grand banners, but as yet another seemingly clichéd transmigration story…

Only this time, cleansing and expansion will start from the very bottom.
