Rebirth in the 1960s

Jiang Laidi’s early life could only be described as tragic.

Born into a backward, ignorant mountain village, she had an honest but powerless father, a timid mother, and four older sisters. Her domineering grandfather and sharp-tongued grandmother drained their family dry to support her uncle’s household.
